Un restaurant de Lisbonne  aux airs de Pub mais à la cuisine portugaise

                                      Pabe is an original restaurant in many ways.

Starting with its name, because Pabe is a deformation of Pub.  Indeed, when it was created in the 70s, the name of pub was refused. So it was Pabe, with an almost identical pronunciation in Portuguese and a different writing.

The second great originality is that it’s really a pub. At least in appearance. The front is like an English country inn, the entrance door to shake your boots, and the carpet with large floral patterns, and the huge bar adds to the idea of a very British pub.

The figurines on display everywhere help to create the atmosphere.

The whole place is extremely warm and the attentive and friendly waiters, some of whom have been here since the pub’s beginnings, help to make you feel at home.

The restaurant is known as a meeting place for politicians, journalists and business people. It has been so from the beginning, and the proximity of the newspaper Express – now moved – and the Diario de Noticias have contributed to this reputation.

It is even said that an important Portuguese political party was born in this restaurant.

                      Pabe in the plates is a real restaurant of Portuguese gastronomy .

It sometimes borrows from the French cuisine, but this is an already ancient influence in Lusitanian gastronomy.

You can taste the great classics, the octopus a la Lagareiro, the grilled cod and its accompaniment of beans and purslane, the rice with lobster, the fillet of sea bass à la portugaise. On the meat side, one of the few places where we serve a chateaubriand, a fondant steak tartare, suckling pig in orange sauce.

The restaurant proposes a dish of the day, each day its own dish. At  http://www.lisbonne-affinités.com  we melt for a delicious duck roasted to perfection, crispy skin, soft meat, served at the table by the efficient staff. The secret? sloooooow cooking. A marvel.

The starter menu is remarkable, don’t miss the crab crumbs à la Pabe , served with condiments presented in a very original way.

As for the desserts, here again it is a concentrate of the most beautiful Portuguese sweets (doce). But not to be missed, the crêpes Suzette………..flambéed at the table, as it is increasingly rare to see

After a complete cleaning, the new owners have chosen to keep his style. The renewed crockery is elegant (nice coffee cups).

The cellar is composed of dozens of vintages, some foreigners. They are clearly visible at the entrance.

The restaurant, which appeals to the elite, is also family-style, and discerning tourists looking for more sophisticated but typical cuisine will find their happiness at the Pabe.

Count 50 euros per person.

Opinion :

The impeccable service led by the maître de salle Almiro Vilar. The excellent cuisine of chef Luis Roque, who is particularly attentive to quality local products and who knows how to make a classic without boredom.  The feeling of being somewhere else, in an indefinable and comfortable atmosphere.  The restaurant has a real non-smoking room.

Price side: high. There is no “menu of the day” proposal for example. But it is a gastronomic experience, a choice of restaurant faithful to its origins. The Pabe is an institution also for the stomach and for the wallet.
